Do I need a multivitamin?

It’s common now a days to hear the phrase “I’m run off my feet!” or “I’m fine, but so busy” or “I just don’t have the time” when catching up with friends and relatives. Life is just so busy. Add in trying to get the right amount of exercise and your ‘five a day’ and you REALLY have a tight schedule. But tight schedules and busyness are not good enough reasons to ignore the things your body needs to stay healthy.

To function and develop at their best, our bodies need specific minerals and vitamins. These all have essential functions and if you don’t have enough (or if you have too much) it can lead to serious health issues. The most common vitamins include A, C, D, E, and K, and the B vitamins: thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxal (B6), cobalamin (B12), biotin, and folate/folic acid.

Vitamins A, C and E are all powerful antioxidants, protecting our bodies from free radicles that we generate through moving and breaking down food. If left unchecked, these free radicles can cause major damage to our cells so it’s important to get enough antioxidants to protect ourselves. Not only is vitamin C a great antioxidant it’s also important for collagen formation which is vital for healthy skin, tendons, and ligaments. B-vitamins have a whole different role in our bodies, helping us to get energy from the food we eat or create new substances in the body. Vitamin D is very important in bone and immune health and vitamin K is utilized in the body in blood clotting.

Ideally, we get all these essential vitamins from a healthy balanced diet, but like we said – life is busy! We often don’t have the time to prepare meals in the week that have enough fresh fruit, veggies, whole grains, and other healthy foods. Even if we do get the time (or let’s be honest – the energy!) to make healthy meals, we many not be getting the right amounts of vitamins for our body’s specific needs. So where do we turn?

Most people don’t need a multivitamin supplement but sometimes we could do with a bit of extra help. Multivitamins are useful for a whole range of reasons, perhaps you’re elderly [3], pregnant, or you just don’t have access to the healthy food you need. Maybe you’re over-stressed or anxious, have recently had surgery, or can only eat a limited or restricted diet because of an illness or food allergies. In these situations, taking a multivitamin can mean a world of change!
